Why Maryland? |
| Maryland is the center of the Boston-Atlanta Corridor on the Atlantic seaboard. The state borders Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Maryland’s median household income is the highest among U.S. States. Approximately 90 percent of Maryland’s 5.6 million residents live in the Maryland portion of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia combined statistical area. The entire metropolitan area represents the nation’s fourth-largest retail market. |
| Maryland’s diversified economy is rooted in high technology, biosciences and services, as well as revitalized manufacturing and international trade. Transportation resources include the port of Baltimore and the Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Professional and technical workers constitute 25.4 percent of the State’s work force- the second highest concentration among U.S. States. Maryland also ranks second among the states in educational attainment- 36 percent of Maryland’s population age 25 and above holds a bachelor’s degree or higher. Maryland’s 167,800 small businesses employ more than two million workers with an annual payroll of $123 billion. Of these businesses, 3,600 have 100 or more workers. |
| Maryland is a Research & Development Hub: |
| Maryland ranks second nationally in federal obligation for research and development ($11.7 billion). Johns Hopkins University ranks first among U.S. colleges and Universities in total National Institutes of Health awards. Maryland has the second highest concentration of doctoral scientists and engineers among the states. Maryland ranks second nationally in the Milken Institute’s State Biopharmaceutical Innovation pipeline Index. According to Ernst & Young, Maryland has the third largest cluster of biotechnology companies among states in the U.S. The Washington D.C. metro area, ranks first on entrepreneurial activity, small business growth, economic growth and risk and number of venture capital investment in startup and early-stage companies. The Washington-Baltimore area ranks second overall among U.S. metropolitan areas in the number of IT professionals certified in cyber defense technologies, disaster recovery and planning, internet security, network security, TCP/IP administration and WAN technologies. | |
